WARDJet’s Waterjet Keeps Foam Company Thriving

Established in 1994, Surco Inc is a family-owned business in Missouri that specializes in the fabrication of foam products. When they first started, they were a one-man shop with a bailer, a band saw, and a slitter. Today, with the help of WARDJet’s single-head waterjet cutting solution, they’re designing for a variety of industries throughout the United States. From packaging to seating, and bedding to automotive, they’re building a reputation as being the “best in the mid-west” for a reason. Recent exposure by news network KSDK News showcases their waterjet machine as the creators of football helmet liners and shin guards, as well as being the manufacturing site for HG1, a headband for soccer athletes. With concussion injuries on the rise, the headband is gaining media attention for helping to reduce the number of concussions out on the playing field.

David W. Surkamp, Vice-President, recalls growing up in the business as a child, traveling with his father, David E. Surkamp (a Sales Rep at the time) to see how different companies made foam. “I actually got to go to a company in Chicago that gave us basketball tickets. I got to see Michael Jordan play, which was really neat.”

Eventually, David E. Surkamp started his own foam company, along with his wife, Darlene. As business bloomed, so did the need to cut a wider variety of materials, both soft and hard. “Dust is a real issue in our industry,” explains Surkamp. “When cutting parts with water, dust is eliminated.”

The water-only waterjet is used every day, for samples and small production runs. Crosslink XLPE, Urethane, Polyethylene, EPE are a few of the materials that they cut with the machine, as well as hard plastics and wood.

Since purchasing the waterjet, the company has cut down on waste as well as dust. Surkamp stressed the importance of using the nesting program to help them in this regard. “The nesting program is a must to yield out your material.”

The company is very happy with the waterjet’s cutting capabilities, and are thinking of purchasing another waterjet, with more heads to run orders faster on the machine. Surkamp states they will undoubtedly return to WARDJet for this purchase.

“WARDJet customer service is the best in the industry,” says Surkamp. “They stand behind their product and the customer service is by far better than any other company. If we have a problem, we can get it up and running pretty fast.”
